An emotional Police Commissioner Bill Bratton presided over his final promotions ceremony at NYPD headquarters Tuesday, telling the officers that he hopes they can look back on their lives and say, “What I did mattered.”
“When the time comes for you to exit, as I will in the coming weeks from this profession, I hope that you have the experience of looking back on your careers and saying, ‘I had a good life. I had a good time in the New York City Police Department. What I did counted for something. What I did mattered,’” Bratton told the officers being promoted.
He also encouraged the newly promoted cops, who included 60 new lieutenants, to keep striving for greater leadership roles within the department and to use the powers that come with their new positions for good.
