35 year old, 17 year veteran Milwaukee Police Officer Matthew Rittner was murdered in the line of duty today, February 6, 2019. Officer Rittner served at least six years in the Marine Corps Reserves as an infantry rifleman. He deployed to Iraq twice.
MPD's Tactical Enforcement Unit was executing a search warrant at 9:17 a.m. near 12th and Manitoba. At 9:20 a.m. the enforcement unit made contact with two people and shots were fired. This is the third time in seven months that a Milwaukee Police officer has died in the line of duty. Officer Charles Irvine, Jr. was killed in a rollover crash in June. Officer Michael Michalski died in a shooting on the city's north side in late July.
