Rank-and-file cops are outraged that Police Commissioner James O’Neill said the department “failed” the bat-wielding woman shot and killed by a sergeant on Tuesday, sources said.
Officers have flooded the phone banks of both the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association and the Sergeants Benevolent Association to express their anger, with many saying that O’Neill’s comment eroded his reputation as a “cop’s cop,” police sources insist.
“This decision [by O’Neill] won’t be forgotten easily — he’s dead to the rank and file,” one union official said.
Officers also are upset that O’Neill allowed Sgt. Hugh Barry to be put on modified duty for shooting Deborah Danner.
