While major crime continues to drop in the city, there is one group of victims that has been increasingly targeted for assault — police officers, authorities revealed Monday.
NYPD Deputy of Operations Dermot Shea said there has been a 23 percent increase in attacks on cops so far this year compared to the same period in 2015 — and the troubling statistic could be related to the department’s increase in gun arrests.
“As gun arrests go up, we’re seeing our assaults on police officers … up significantly,” Shea said.
“Gun arrests in New York City, up 11.6 percent for the year, very interesting to note, and the correlation that could be there as we reduce some of the misdemeanor and violation arrests and continue our focus on drivers of violence and other crimes in New York City,” he said.
There have been 995 assaults on cops so far this year compared to 804 in the same period last year, he said.
The 23 percent increase is “further evidence of our officers putting themselves in harm’s way,” Shea said.
