The bumbling Bronx cop who left the key to an NYPD cruiser in the ignition — allowing a thief to swipe it from a station house — walked away from the running patrol car because he thought a late-shift officer was going to take over, Police Commissioner James O’Neill said Monday.
“He assumed somebody from the midnight shift was going to take that car. That didn’t happen,” O’Neill said. “So the police officer who left it there and the desk sergeant are going to both be disciplined.”
Asked what the officers’ punishment would be, O’Neill responded, “Not sure yet.”
