Yulee, Fla.– Nassau County Deputy Eric Oliver has died in the line of duty today. 32-year old, Eric Oliver was a seven year veteran of the department.
Nassau County Deputy Eric Oliver was in pursuit of a suspect on foot, around 7:45 this morning, when he was fatally struck by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff Lepper of Nassau County fought back emotion as he explained the details of what happened. Lepper explained that Border Patrol agents were interviewing six people in a pick-up truck at a gas station on A1A near Chester Road. Deputies from Nassau County were dispatched to the gas station on an unrelated call when they were asked to stay and help the Border Patrol Agents.
One suspect fled on foot and Oliver and another officer pursued after him. The first officer made it across A1A to the median, Oliver did not. “One just got across into the median. The second failed to get across and was struck by another vehicle that was traveling westbound,” Leeper said. “He sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene” The suspect is still at large and is described as a Hispanic male wearing dark blue jeans. There is an active manhunt in the area and residents are urged to avoid the area.
