Tom Nerney (left) and retired Detective Dan Austin.Former veteran NYPD Detective Tom Nerney has died, friends said. He was 77.
Nerney of Glendale, Queens, went to Jamaica Hospital on Saturday after waking up with chest pains, said a pal, retired Detective Dan Austin.
“He was just a great guy,” Austin said. “I just got an e-mail from him, and everything was fine. Then, the guy wakes up in the morning, he’s got chest pains, and then he’s gone.
“Tommy had the NYPD — that was his family.”
Nerney retired in 2002 from the department’s Major Case Squad. He later ran his own investigative firm.
Austin recalled responding to a church in Midtown with Nerney in the 1990s after gang-bangers crashed a birthday party there.
He said the members had ditched their guns anywhere possible when cops showed up, including in speakers and toilets. There was also a large pot of chili on a table, he said.
“I said, ‘Tommy, what do you think is in that pot?’” Austin recalled. “He said, ‘I don’t know. You wanna find out?’ He dumped the whole thing on the floor, and all these knives and guns were in there. It was amazing how many weapons they had.”
Nerney lived in Glendale his whole life. He left no surviving family, said a worker with the Leo Kearns Funeral Home, which is handling his interment.
A viewing is scheduled for Wednesday from 1 to 9 p.m. at Leo Kearns, 6140 Woodhaven Blvd., Rego Park, Queens. The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursdayat Sacred Heart Church, 8317 78th Ave., Glendale, Queens.
Eric Garner chokehold cop ties the knot
Actually the head lock cop, he never blocked the airway of the overweight and ill individual who decided to resist arrest for the minor charge of selling loose cigarettes. An arrest that was ordered by an African American chief and African American Sgt at the scene, so don't even bring up race. An unfortunate and sad ending that could have been avoided if Garner did not resist LAWFUL arrest.
So congratulations sir, enjoy your day.
