From an anonymous NYPD police officer-
There are people in your life that make a huge impact on you. Some you know your whole life. Some you only met once. Thier words are impactful and brave. The way that they carry themselves is indicative of the finest character and values.
Those few, you can close your eyes and playback a moment in time so vivid that it's burned into your brain like a DVD in HD. When you are weak, those words and gestures replay in your head and make you feel silly for your small transgressions and troubles. They are born leaders, something you can't teach, No way you can learn it from a book or a class.
I have told this story before. I sat across from this man at meal during the early days of 9/11. He looked very much like in this picture. I asked him what he was doing there, being a little older than most of us.
" I'm looking for my sons"
Turns out I vaguely knew his Son Joe.
We talked for an hour or so, he ate his meal and donned his half melted hat on his head and headed off to search for his Sons John- FDNY and Joe NYPD, who were both lost that day.
I saw him later that day, and a few days later. He greeted me each time by name as if he knew me forever. I asked about his progress, he asked about mine. I later learned more about him and it just increased my respect for him.
He has been battling Cancer and has just been moved home to hospice care. He will soon be home with his Boys.
The search is over Captain.
My search for strength like yours continues, I'll be digging forever to find it.
I hope you know what an impact you've made on so many.
Just Incredible, I hope you read this and understand how much you've shaped my life after 9/11.
Semper Fi, Marine.
