Today the Bureau of Justice Assistance released initial guidance based on conversations we have had with U.S. Department of Justice officials on how the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits (PSOB) program will consider Coronavirus- and COVID-19-related death and disability claims. This is welcome news and we applaud Attorney General William Barr and this Administration for their ongoing efforts in support of our nation’s first responders during this unprecedented time.
While this guidance is important for those whose health has or will be impacted by COVID-19, changes to current law will be necessary to provide full coverage under the PSOB program for our nation’s Law Enforcement Officers, Firefighters and EMTs who are serving on the front lines of this national public health emergency. That is why I instructed our Washington Representatives to work with the SBA’s allies in Congress to establish a presumptive PSOB death and disability standard for inclusion in the “Phase 4” Coronavirus response legislation currently under development on Capitol Hill. On this issue and every other related to the current pandemic, the SBA will continue in our efforts to fully protect our members and their families.
Please follow all safety instructions and remain cautious.
